I still remember the moment I first fell in love with you,
my heart and eyes were full of you,
time and breath could even pause.
We leaned on each other,
until we wore the long, white wedding dress.
That ring engraved with words of love,
willingly made me and you into two concentric circles.
From then on, we became one,
I in you, you in me,
we would have the same goals,
the same values,
whether in good times or bad,
we would walk together.

As time passed,
in the hustle and bustle,
I discovered how different we had become.
What I had pursued all my life,
only earned you a careless smile;
the truths you fought for,
I didn’t care about at all.
From entertainment preferences to ways of doing things,
misunderstandings and conflicts kept increasing.
Under the same roof,
we argued, separated, and reunited repeatedly.
Slowly,
the two concentric circles moved in different directions,
drifting further apart, becoming two separate circles.
I went on a trip with my best friend,
you went to a dinner with your friends,
I didn’t even know where you were on a business trip tonight,
nor did I know you were drunk,
who would care for you?
The lingering feeling in my heart made me unwilling to give up,
I tried to pull you back to the original circle,
returning to the past, becoming concentric again.
But after trying every possible way,
I still couldn’t bring the two circles closer again.

For a long time,
I kept wavering between breaking up and holding on,
questioning my decisions night after night.
Until one day,
someone asked me, what was it about him that you fell in love with at first?
What about him made you fall in love?
Ah, that was our intersection!
From that point,
gradually, within this intersection,
we added trust, understanding, support, respect…
We’ve had sweet moments, heartbreaks,
never quite finding the right distance between us.
Now, I’ve realized we can hold hands,
chasing our own dreams;
I’ve realized the best distance between us
is adjusting the intersection between the two circles.
Every couple has different personalities, values, and backgrounds,
so the size of the intersection will vary,
how big or small should the intersection between me and him (her) be?
This requires a ‘map of love’!
